The Maine Bail Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides cash bail to community members held in county jails around the state.
The people we are bailing out have not been found guilty of the charges against them. Every day that someone sits in jail makes it more difficult for them to maintain housing, employment, and community.
Cash bail allows wealthier individuals to buy back their freedom after arrest and better prepare to defend themselves in court. Meanwhile, those without means sit in jail, cut off from resources to mount a defense. Bail funds work to address this disparity.
In addition to posting bail for eligible recipients, the Maine Bail Fund strives to educate the public about how bail works and to collaborate with stakeholders to reform the Maine Bail Code.
As of July 2026, the Maine Bail Fund has bailed out three people.
While we recognize that a bail fund cannot fix the systemic issues in our criminal justice system, the Maine Bail Fund aims to help our incarcerated neighbors return to their communities while awaiting trial.
